If you’re going to wear braces for a period of time, you don’t want to have them taken off and find ugly tooth decay or permanent stains. That’s why it’s important to take good care of not only your braces, but especially the teeth underneath!
How to Brush Braces
Did you know that your braces can actually attract the same plaque as your teeth? If left there, the plaque can actually stain your teeth. It’s important to brush every time you eat, which not only removes plaque – it gets rid of the embarrassing “food stuck in your braces” look. Brush top to bottom with a soft toothbrush, and then use the proxabrush (which is tree-shaped) to clean between braces.
Foods to Avoid
Fluoride mouthwash is also a good idea, as it can get into places that aren’t reachable by your toothbrush. Of course, it’s best to avoid certain foods while you’re wearing braces – chewy or tough foods like apples, taffy, popcorn and carrots. And, of course, corn on the cob.
Flossing with Braces
To floss your teeth while wearing braces, Fitzpatrick Orthodontics recommends that you poke the floss between the main arch wire and the upper part of your tooth, next to the gum. Pull the floss gently back and forth, cleaning the two teeth on either side.
